Pleasantville and the theme of the cave

At the beginning of the film, David watches the show Pleasantville and thinks it would be the idea reality. The TV is device that shows the shadows, thus the reliance on black and white. The TV repairman is the puppet master and finds the idea person to live in his fake fantasy. Once David gets into the TV show, he finds that this reality is not so pleasant after all. Once he sees that he can share his knowledge with the citizens, he does so, despite his initial reluctance to do so. As people realise that there is more to life than pleasantly-ness, they become colored. Just as in Plato's story of the cave, the people who become enlightened are discriminated against. In the end everyone becomes colored because the TV repairman wanted to teach David and his sister a lesson. In addition to the strong images of the cave, their are other religious images, such as the story of Eve offering Adam an apple.

P.S-

We meant to write allegory of the cave. Not story. Thank you, that is all.

Initially the Allegory of the Cave comparison here would seem a little dry and over-used, but you guys did a good job providing some good examples and evidence to support it.

Curious. Are you suggesting that there are two allegories of the cave running simultaneously throughout the film? The big-picture allegory would center around David and his modern-day idea of perfect family life-- the shadows would be the black and white episodes of Pleasantville. He "leaves" the cave and sees the truth by, in fact, entering the Pleasantville world and experiencing it for himself. At the end, he re-enters the cave (reality) to share his new-found wisdom with his mom. The second manifestation of the allegory would be the subplot of events just within Pleasantville and only dealing with those characters.
That's a pretty cool idea, if that's what you were going for... or maybe I'm just over-analyzing stuff again...
